Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Wins Two Awards At BAFTA Opening Night | NOW

The first BAFTAs, the most important British film awards, of this year have been awarded. On Saturday evening, the winners were announced in eight smaller categories during a small and sober ceremony on TV. The film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom received two awards, making it the title with the most awards so far.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom won in the best makeup & hair and best costume design categories. The film has a chance to win one award on Sunday, because Chadwick Boseman has been nominated in the best actor category. Chances are that that nomination will also be cashed in. Boseman, who died of cancer last August at the age of 43, has already won the prize at various previous award ceremonies, including during the Golden Globes presentation. The role also earned him an Oscar nomination.

The BAFTAs will take place virtually spread over two evenings this year. Due to the pandemic, no audience is allowed.

Other prize winners were Saturday Rocks (best casting), Mank (best production design), Sound of Metal (best sound) and Tenet (best visual effects). The Present won the prize for best short film and The Owl and the Pussycat received the prize for best British short animation. Filmmaker and actor Noel Clarke was awarded a BAFTA for his exceptional contribution to the film world.

Prince Philip died

During the start of the broadcast, the death of the British Prince Philip was briefly discussed. He was the first president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1959. “The Duke of Edinburgh has a special place in BAFTA history and he will be sorely missed. Our thoughts go out to his family,” said presenter Clara Amfo.

Originally, Philip’s grandson Prince William, the current BAFTA president, would attend the ceremony on Saturday and Sunday. But due to Philip’s death, his contribution has been canceled.
