Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said BMKG also checked the readiness of local government officials for scenarios in the event of an M8.7 earthquake and tsunami.
“We went along the coast from East Java to the Sunda Strait to check. What we are worried about, from historical records, is that an earthquake whose strength is above M7 and the worst case scenario is M8.7 could generate a tsunami,” said Dwikorita in the Webinar: Earthquake and Tsunami Study and Mitigation in East Java, Friday (28/5/2021). .
The following are BMKG early warnings that the public needs to be aware of:
1. M8.7 Earthquake and Tsunami
BMKG predicts an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 and a tsunami with a height of 29 meters in East Java. This prediction emerged after BMKG conducted mathematical modeling, to measure the potential magnitude of the earthquake and tsunami height in the area.
This was presented by the Head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati in a webminar entitled Earthquake and Tsunami Studies and Mitigation in East Java.
From the modeling results found facts about the tsunami in East Java. The maximum potential for a tsunami on the entire coast is in Trenggalek Regency with a range of 26-29 meters. Meanwhile, for the fastest time, it was recorded at 20-24 minutes in Blitar Regency.
