The consultation ended at 12 noon today through which certified and voting members were able to express themselves on two questions proposed by the political leader of the 5 Star Movement, Vito Crimi: a first relating to the modification of the zero mandate for municipal councilors and a second concerning the alliances of the lists of the Movement at the municipal level with traditional parties.
A total of 48,975 eligible voters took part in the two votes and expressed a total of 97,685 preferences. As regards question 1, yeses clearly win: 80,1% against 19.9%. On question 2 yes they get the 59,9% of consents, against 40.1%.
The party is split. On the one hand the Orthodox reluctant to alliances, on the other hand the rest of the movement following one of its major leaders, Luigi di Maio. He is blunt when he states: “Yes to the new internal rules that M5s members are called to approve. Two yes because I trust the territories”, is the title of the long post that appeared on the Facebook page of the former political leader.
The main game concerns the changes to the zero mandate that Di Maio himself had introduced last year: with the new formulation, the first mandate as municipal councilor always becomes null and void. In this way it will be possible to re-nominate Virginia Raggi in Rome. And in his post Di Maio immediately goes to the point: “Today we are called to vote on Rousseau to unlock the third term for Virginia Raggi and all our other mayors who want to reapply for another term. I will vote yes, I think it’s right”. The reason: “Losing people who have such an experience as Virginia would be suicidal”.
The acceleration of the mayor of Rome, who announced in recent days the ricandidatura, has displaced everyone and even more the decision of the top management to open up to a more structured axis with the dem. Now there is the prospect not only of an alliance in the next elections, but also the possibility, for example, that in the capital dem and cinquestelle they may converge to the second ballot.
The grillini of the Orthodox wing which has as a reference point Alessandro Di Battista, they were for the yes to the Raggi but, like Davide Casaleggio, they did not want other exceptions. And above all they were reluctant to open the discussion on the subject of a structural alliance with the Democratic Party. The senator Barbara Lezzi announced on Facebook his “no” to alliances with other parties: “It is a question of method, these decisions should not be handed down by the political leader after consulting the guarantee committee, but should be left to the responsibilities of the various territories in order not to fall prey to distant Roman dynamics”. Vice versa the president of the chamber, Roberto Fico, thought it appropriate to open a reflection on future agreements. Now the die is cast. The balance sheet is certainly positive Nicola Zingaretti, Pd secretary, makes the vote: “The result of the M5s members on alliances is a good fact. We are an alliance between different forces, but to govern you need to be allies, not adversaries. I think it is a very positive fact that we can make common paths together”.
