The M3GAN doll is a marvel of artificial intelligence, a perfectly programmed machine that can be a child’s best friend and, perhaps more importantly, the perfect ally for his parents. Its author is Gemma (Allison Williams), a brilliant technician who develops a doll for a major toy company. When her sister and her husband die in a car crash, her eight-year-old niece Cady (Violet McGraw) enters Gemma’s life, who survived the crash with only a few scratches. Since Gemma is hopelessly inept at dealing with children and the traumatized Cady needs outlet and above all friends, she becomes the perfect tester for the M3GAN prototype. This decision will have far-reaching consequences. At first everything goes really well: the girl recovers quickly in the company of her new “friend”, and for Gemma the awareness that there is a being who will watch over, advise and instruct Gemma is the ideal solution. Unfortunately, prototypes are characterized by the fact that they tend to be technically flawed and things can go wrong with them.
