Luxury Cars Use Engines Below 2,000 cc, Can You Still Buy Pertalite?

Jakarta

The Downstream Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) proposed that cars above 2,000 cc are no longer allowed to fill Pertalite fuel. A car with these criteria is considered a luxury car. Basically not all cars above 2,000 cc can be categorized as luxury.

For cars in the premium segment, BMW to Mercedes-Benz also have models with engine capacities below 2,000 cc.

Citing wholesale distribution data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 AMG Line carries a 1,332 cc engine or AMG CLA 45 S with a similar engine capacity. Then BMW also has the X1 sDrive18i F48 A/T and X2 sDrive 18i A/T SUVs with 1,499 cc engines.

Then there are other cars with a capacity of 1,500 cc which have a price tag of Rp. 500 million. So are these models still allowed to consume Pertalite?

BPH Migas Committee member Saleh Abdurrahman was quoted by CNBC Indonesia as saying that in fact a row of luxury cars no longer uses Pertalite, but BBM with a higher octane content in the class of Pertamax.

“New cluster cars from manufacturers are usually recommended to use high octane, it can be more efficient and pro-environment, we hope so,” said Saleh.

Pertalite with a Research Octane Number (90) should indeed be used for cars with certain criteria. Citing the MyPertamina page, Pertalite BBM is suitable for vehicles with 9:1 to 10:1 engine compression.

If the engine compression of the vehicle is above that, it requires fuel with a higher octane content with RON 92. If the compression of the vehicle engine is higher than that of users of RON 92 BBM, then fuel with a higher RON is required.

As for the model, on the Daihatsu Indonesia page, it writes that cars with engine displacements of 9:1 to 10:1 are commonly found in cars from 2014 and below. As for cars output 2014 and above already have a compression ratio of 11:1. It should be underlined that the question of prohibiting 2,000 cc cars from buying Pertalite is still just a suggestion. All possibilities are still subject to change until the decision is finally passed.

“But again, this is still a draft proposal. The criteria can still be changed because this is still a temporary draft,” Saleh explained.
