Austria Lustenau had already achieved something historic in Klagenfurt before the final in the soccer ÖFB Cup against Red Bull Salzburg on Friday (8.45pm / live ORF one). The Vorarlbergers are now the only club in the history of the competition that has made it into the final twice as a non-Oberhaus club.

Overall, there has been a duel “David against Goliath” in the title final so far. The outcome of the duel did not always correspond to the paper form. In 1988, Kremser SC under Ernst Weber defeated FCS Tirol, coached by legend Legend Happel, in the second and third leg with 2-0 and 1-3 thanks to the away goals rule.
Just three years later, SV Stockerau, then coached by Willi Kreuz, repeated the sensation with a 2-1 final victory over Rapid with coach Hans Krankl and national flagships like Andreas Herzog, goalie Michael Konsel and Peter Schöttel. Finally, FC Carinthia celebrated a 2-1 win after extra time against FC Tirol under Walter Schachner.
Even more surprising was the triumph of FC Pasching in 2013, who was the only third division to win the Cup, which has been played as an Austrian competition since 1946. The Upper Austrians then beat Wiener Austria 1-0.
Sometimes David wins against Goliath
“There are always examples,” said Lustenau’s sporting director Bernd Bösch to the APA. “This year, the promotion of Saarbrücken as a fourth division in the DFB Cup quarter-final against Düsseldorf (note: 7: 6 i.E.) was the biggest sensation. We also know what Dudelange did (note: CL qualification promotion against Salzburg 2012), in Cup Pasching, or many years ago Stockerau. In football, David can sometimes win against Goliath. ”
The surprise did not succeed in 2011
As the only club from Vorarlberg to be in the final so far, Lustenau came as no surprise at the premiere final on May 26, 2011. The former Bundesliga club SV Ried kept the upper hand in the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna thanks to a double set by Markus Hammerer (41st, 67th) with 2: 0. It was one of the Underdog’s seven defeats in the final.
The Wr. Sports club that came to the finals in 1977 as the first underclass club but had no chance against Austria (0: 1 and 0: 3). There were also final defeats for FC Linz 1994 (0: 4 against Austria), DSV Leoben 1995 (0: 1 against Rapid), Vienna 1997 (1: 2 against Sturm Graz), and Admira 2009 (1: 3 nV against Austria) ) and after Lustenau also for the SKN St. Pölten 2014 (2: 4 against Salzburg).
