Lukashenko warns Serbia not to sit on three chairs

The President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko commented on the deterioration of the situation in Serbia and talked about the possibility of support of this country in a conversation with journalists, BelTA reported.

“Must to distinguish between leadership and ordinary people. If you were me, how would you see everything? Of course, we must help the Serbian people and we will. We are that kind of people. But we will take into account Serbia’s policy towards Belarus. Want to sit, as they say, on three chairs, but they will not succeed. Here we are Russia, EU, USA and so on…They want to be nice to everyone. They will not be given this chance to balanceabove all from the European Union, which they so want to join,” the president said.

To a question what Belarus can do for SerbiaLukashenko noted that he had this issue in mind earlier: “I don’t know what we can do for them. First I would look at what they did when Belarus was facing sanctions. I don’t want to dig into the recent pastbut look…”

Lukashenko recalls that he visited Serbia in 1999 Mr. “I went there risking my life… It was really dangerous. NATO (already on their bombing mission there) directed us to use the altitude of 500 meters (that’s the altitude for a helicopter). They thought I wouldn’t go and flew back home. But I I ordered the pilots to fly at 500 m. Of course they do they could shoot down the plane, but they didn’t dare. That would be an exceptional case. I flew there under the bombing“, says the Belarusian head of state.

He draws attention to the fact that a few years later the Serbian leadership joined some sanctions. “Now I think about it. But, on the other hand, these are our relatives. The Serbs are good, reasonable people. Well, they were unlucky, maybe, in some ways. They weren’t in some others,” the president said.

BelTA recalls that the international mission under the auspices of NATO in Kosovo (KFOR) announced its readiness to intervene in the situation on the border between Kosovo and Serbia, if there are threats to stability in the region.

KFOR will take all necessary measures to maintain a safe and secure environment in Kosovo anytime, in accordance with the UN mandate“, the statement said. KFOR said the situation in northern Kosovo is “tense” and is being closely monitored by forces.

Tensions between the two sides had escalated before the new lawwhich requires Serbs entering Kosovo to carry a Kosovo identity card, instead of using only Serbian card. The same applies to vehicle registration numbers.

NATO encouraged the continuation of the “EU-mediated dialogue” between the two countries.

“It’s important that this continues. It is critical to regional peace and security. There will be no real prospects for a better future in the Balkans without full respect for human rights and democratic values, the rule of law, internal reforms and good neighborly relations,” KFOR said on Sunday.
