Buenos Aires – Argentinian actress Luisana Lopilato is expanding her career into film production, demonstrating a proactive approach to bringing stories to the screen, she revealed at the Iberseries festival.Lopilato, known for her international work in film and television, detailed her experiences navigating autonomous financing and co-productions to realize her projects.
Lopilato emphasized her dedication to pursuing projects she believes in, stating, “I always knock on doors, even if someone says no.” She shared that her creative process frequently enough begins with reading and discussing potential stories with her husband, Michael Bublé. “I always have material at home, and I’m always telling my husband… ‘I’m working on this story I just received. How can I improve it?’ And that’s how everything starts, working at home.”
Currently, Lopilato has completed filming Pepita la Pistolera (or The Gunwoman (Pepita’s Legend)), a biopic inspired by the life of Margarita Di Tullio, a prominent figure in Argentina’s criminal underworld. directed by Lucia puenzo, the film was a passion project for Lopilato, who actively sought the rights to Di Tullio’s story during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is a story that I was looking for for a long time,” she said. Despite initial challenges securing backing from streaming platforms, Lopilato persevered, presenting detailed creative concepts - including visual ideas – to demonstrate her commitment. “I created all this PowerPoint [stuff] with all the ideas I had for the movie, even the light, [to prove that] I was actually genuine.”
To finance another film, Lopilato secured a co-production deal to shoot in Canada. Details of this project remain undisclosed.
Lopilato acknowledged the increased workload and pressure that come with producing, but highlighted the valuable insights she’s gained into the business side of filmmaking, including marketing costs and distribution trends.
