Luis Suescún: The Independent Colombian Writer with a Passion for Horror and Tradition

Luis Suescún is a writer from Caliwho grew up in Bogotá, studied Communication at the Grancolombiano Polytechnic and has made a space for himself as an independent writer in Colombia for three years.

This year, he participated for the second time in the Bogotá International Book Fair (Filbo), with the launch of four books, a writing workshop, a poetry recital and other talks.

Together with the AG Editorial team, he simultaneously launched the books: ‘Eternal Blues: 101 poems’, ‘The Boatman’s Coins: 101 stories’, ‘Three stories from Suescún’ and ‘Astronaut Meat: Sol Inferno’.

The author deploys his entire narrative range, from the novel, poetry and, of course, the short story, a field where he is widely known for his trilogy of ‘Macabre Tales’ (2021). which has become a must-have for fans of horror and fantasy,” they said in a statement.

Here, you have to do everything: dedicate yourself to writing, carry your books, go to fairs and stand on a stage to read.

His stories are essentially -and mostly- horror. One of the books with which he has been most successful, with four reprints, is ‘Relatos Macabros’; ‘The seed of the vampire’ has also received a good reception among readers, who -according to he comments- are audiences of all ages.

To be independent, he created his own editorial line within a communications agency that he manages, AG Editorial.

He says that he began the judicious trade as a writer about ten years ago, three years ago he began to publish and since then eleven books have been published with their respective reprints, many have been liked by critics and he has received various awards and mentions for his work. . For example, he was a finalist for Cuentos de Terror Perú, in 2018; he was chosen for Bogotá in 100 words, in 2016; he obtained first place in the Festival of Souls, among others. In total he has received 15 literature awards.

“I have felt very comfortable being independent but I am not closed to working with publishers. Here, you have to do everything: dedicate yourself to writing, carry your books, go to fairs and stand on a stage to read, ”he says about his job.

He frequently goes to different fairs around the country, reads his stories aloud, with all the conviction and verisimilitude, personally greets each of his readers and usually shares the photos he takes with them on social networks.

“I feel that in Colombia things are more difficult than in other countries because the cultural part is more difficult in Colombia. It also happens that people do not read. I feel that in another country things could work much better because of the reading rates. However, it is speculation as it is not a field that I know of firsthand,” she adds.

It has little or nothing to do with blood, but rather with Colombian tradition.

Suescún tries to create literature for the whole family, which has also helped in sales. “My stories have tremendous beauty,” she says proudly. In his texts you can see how he “invents his own monsters and creatures”, many of them set in traditional or common places in Colombia.

“It has little or nothing to do with blood, but with Colombian tradition; more than the theme of terror, it is to alter the perception of things, ”she points out. “It is an enjoyable narrative for all ages,” she emphasizes.

Also, he assures that he has always had “a logic of telling stories”, since his grandparents narrated things to him in childhood.

“The success of adulthood is doing what you did when you were a child, it makes me very happy to be doing works,” he concludes.

The Suescún catalogue, which now has eleven books, is available at the official AG Editorial store: tienda.suescun.blog.
