lucid Eyes Expansion Beyond 20,000-Vehicle Uber Deal, Explores Per-Mile Charging Model
NEW YORK – lucid Motors is gearing up to supply Uber with a considerable fleet of electric vehicles, but the partnership might potentially be just the beginning. The EV maker, fresh off a deal to provide at least 20,000 Gravity SUVs to Uber and autonomous driving firm Nuro over the next six years, is already signaling ambitions to significantly exceed that initial commitment.
The partnership, announced in July, includes a $300 million investment from Uber into Lucid, bolstering the EV manufacturer’s financial position as it prepares for the rollout of robotaxi services. The first Gravity vehicle was recently delivered to Nuro, marking the official launch of the collaboration. Uber plans to introduce the service in a major US city by late 2026.
Lucid’s interim CEO, Marc winterhoff, revealed in a recent interview with the Financial Times that the company is developing strategies to maximize revenue from fleet sales on the Uber platform. While details remain scarce, Winterhoff hinted at a potential per-mile charging model for uber drivers utilizing Lucid vehicles. The FT amended its initial reporting on Saturday to clarify the CEO’s comments regarding fleet management.
Despite the initial agreement for 20,000 vehicles, Winterhoff emphasized that this figure represents a “starting point,” stating, “The sky’s the limit.” This aggressive outlook suggests Lucid anticipates strong demand for its vehicles within the Uber network.
