Lucas and Martina, the names preferred by Canarian parents in 2019 | BE Las Palmas

Lucas and Martina were the most frequent names in the Canary Islands among babies born last year, according to the latest statistics from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which collects the hundred most common names in Spain of the 359,770 children registered in the Civil Registry in 2019, published this Wednesday.

Among the ten names most chosen by Canarian parents, in the case of children, are Mateo, Hugo or Thiago, while in the case of girls, some of the preferred names, in addition to Martina, they are Sofía, Valeria and Lucía.

At the national level, Lucía, unbeatable since 2004, and Hugo once again repeat themselves as the most frequent names among newborns. In the ‘top ten’ of 2019, no new girl’s or boy’s name has entered compared to 2018 and, since 2017, only Leo has appeared, as specified by the INE.

In the case of girls, the ranking offers little variation with respect to 2004, the year in which Lucia ranked first to the detriment of María, who ranked first in 2003 and 2002, when this statistic began to be published.

Thus, in 2019, the most used names for girls were Lucía (3,621), Sofía (3,505), Martina (3,172), María (3,165), Julia (2,600), Paula (2,498), Emma (2,362), Daniela (2,315 ), Valeria (2,248) and Alba (2,097) so, among the newborns, Lucia, Sofía and Martina repeat the ranking of last year.

On the other hand, Julia (from 6th to 5th) and Daniela (from 9th to 8th) advance while Paula (from 5th to 6th) and Valeria (from 8th to 9th) move back.

With regard to males, Alejandro was the most common name between 2002 and 2007, the year in which Daniel broke in until 2012 (although a year before Alejandro regained the witness) and in 2013, Hugo held the first position, which only he yielded in 2017 to Lucas.

Thus, the ‘top ten’ of the most frequent names of children born in 2019 is made up of Hugo (3,536), Martín (3,256), Lucas (3,185), Mateo (3,160), Leo (2,960), Daniel (2,958) , Alejandro (2,937), Pablo (2,868), Manuel (2,460) and Álvaro (2,279).
