Luc and Bart Houben made sausage roll completely hip, but are now bankrupt

Houben Worstenbrood in Eindhoven is bankrupt. Luc and Bart Houben’s brand new bakery and lunchroom on Willemstraat did not survive the corona crisis.

The two brothers moved to their new building in the center of Eindhoven this spring, but were immediately faced with the lockdown in March. Orders were canceled and the food trucks they normally use at music festivals and other events stopped moving.

The year 2020 should have been the year for Houben Worstenbrood, but the opposite turned out to be the case. The new building should have been opened on Friday 13 March by the King’s Commissioner, then still Wim van de Donk. Followed by a big party on Saturday. Instead, everything went into lockdown on Sunday. Bart Houben: “It should have been a blast. But it was the worst start possible.”

For the brothers – who managed to make the traditional Brabant sausage rolls ‘hip’ far beyond the provincial borders – there was no other option than to file for bankruptcy themselves. That was pronounced on Tuesday. The company employs fifteen people. It is not yet known whether there will be a restart.
