Reduce their wages, to preserve their jobs. This is what the pilots of the British Airways company have just accepted. A temporary drop of 20% in their income, reduced to 8% in two years, with the hope of a return to normal in the longer term. In exchange, the redundancies will be limited to 270 instead of the 1,255 planned.
The pandemic has hit the British company hard, which employs 4,300 pilots. According to management, these losses are colossal: “it’s the deepest crisis, we lost more in a quarter than during our worst year“Says Managing Director Willie Walsh. Other airlines have already negotiated wage cuts with their staff for limit social plans : up to 20% less at Ryanair. British Airways fears that it will not find its pre-crisis level before 2023.
