Lower grid tariff mitigates expensive energy bill: average savings of 105 euros

An average Flemish family will have to pay 105 euros less next year for its connection to the electricity and natural gas network. This compensates for a (small) part of the high energy prices.

Distribution network tariffs will fall in 2022 for the fifth year in a row. This is reported by the Flemish energy regulator, the Vreg. According to the Vreg, the compensation that the Flemish distribution system operator Fluvius may receive for electricity will decrease by 20 percent. For natural gas this is a decrease of 6 percent.

What does this mean for a family with an average energy consumption?

A family with a dual meter, an electricity consumption of 3,500 kWh per year and an average monthly peak of 4.26 kW will pay an average of 375 euros (including VAT) in 2022 in distribution network rates. That is 87 euros less than this year.

The grid tariffs for natural gas are also falling, albeit less sharply. A family with a natural gas consumption of 23,260 kWh per year will pay an average of 288 euros (including VAT) in 2022, or 18 euros less than this year.

For a family with average electricity and natural gas consumption, this means a total saving of 105 euros compared to this year. Compared to 2017, the savings are already 215 euros.

Government intervenes

The rate reduction is the result of two recent government decisions. For example, the Flemish government is allocating 147 million euros once to buy green energy certificates, so that they no longer have to be financed via the grid tariffs. The federal government will also convert all kinds of energy taxes into a fixed excise tax, which will also reduce costs.

Drip on hot plate

The tariff reduction is a welcome bonus, but for most consumers its effect will be completely ignored by the sharp rise in market prices for electricity and natural gas. Calculations by the consumer organization Test Aankoop show that a Flemish household that concluded a variable supply contract for natural gas in November will have to pay 1,800 euros more on an annual basis than with a contract concluded in November 2020.
