Lower Austria: fire siren sabotaged in the Baden district

An act of sabotage on the local fire brigade siren occupies the police in Pottenstein, Lower Austria (Baden district). Unknown people cut the power cables of the siren on the roof of the former district court. “Now this important alarm unit has gone silent”, informed the Pottenstein fire brigade on their homepage.

The siren has been providing the civil defense rehearsals for over fifty years, but is primarily used to alert the fire brigade. In many cases she was significantly involved in life-saving missions.

Turn the siren down

“Every now and then the fire brigade has already received inquiries by email whether it is possible to turn the siren down at night,” commander Thomas Schonaklener is quoted on the homepage. Unfortunately, this is not technically possible: The alarm must be guaranteed for the comrades day and night in order to be on the spot as quickly as possible when the fire brigade is needed.

“So there remains a great lack of understanding about this malicious attack on the siren,” said the fire department. The mayor also supports a swift clarification of the act of vandalism. It will be determined and relevant information is requested.
