Exposure to pollutants can lead to decreased lung health and high costs for medical treatment of this disease. The fact that the level of pollution in Indonesia is high is also the reason why we need to take extra care of our lungs.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic that has occurred in the last two years has opened our eyes to the importance of maintaining lung health. VThe COVID-19 virus disrupts the respiratory system with different degrees of severity in sufferers. There are also patients who have recovered who still feel symptoms of COVID-19 for a long time (long covid) which also attacks the brain and lungs.

Those who already have a history of lung disease must be extra vigilant about being infected with COVID-19 because there is a risk of exacerbating existing lung diseases and requiring medical treatment.

Lung disease can affect anyone. In particular, those who have unhealthy lifestyles, such as active smokers, have activities that are often exposed to dust or chemicals for a long time, and live in urban areas that are prone to exposure to air pollution from vehicle exhaust emissions.

“Don’t underestimate lung disease even though some diseases can still be cured, such as acute bronchitis, pneumonia, ARI, TB. There is also a lung disease that is very unlikely to be cured because it has occurred in the long term. The type of treatment and the duration of treatment depend on the critical level. Even if it can recover, there may have been a decrease in lung function. Such as, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) or lung cancer,” he said dr Fridolin Seto PanduSenior Manager Medical Underwriter Sequis.

According to Dr. Fridolin, the main causes of lung disease can vary but generally occur due to smoking for a long time (years) and exposure to chronic air pollution. The rate of recovery or the severity of this disease is strongly influenced by the immune system, age, and the presence of comorbidities.

Air pollution that continues to increase, especially in Jakarta, which is included in the list of the most polluted cities in the world, makes us have to be more vigilant about maintaining the health of this respiratory organ. Here’s the advice of dr. Fridolin to maintain lung health and avoid the causes of the disease:
1. Apply a healthy lifestyle by quitting smoking.
2. Avoid cigarette smoke and exposure to other pollutants.
3. Use a KN95 or KF94 mask when in public spaces.
4. Do not sleep on the floor without a mat.
5. Keep the air clean at home by diligently cleaning windows, ventilation, and air conditioning.
6. Make sure the air circulation in the room remains smooth.
7. Use thick clothes or jackets when driving at night.
8. Take care of personal hygiene by diligently washing your hands with clean ar dans ash.
9. Lung disease is closely related to immunity so it is necessary to be active, exercise regularly.
10. Balance work time with rest.
11. Pay attention to nutritional intake. Carrots, apples, broccoli, fish and omega 3 oils, nuts and yogurt are rich in nutrients that can maintain lung health.
12. Avoid excessive stress. (f)
