Love? Actually, no: Emma Thompson reveals Donald Trump asked her on a date | Emma Thompson

**Emma Thompson** Declined **Donald Trump** Date Offer

Oscar winner reveals bizarre encounter on same day divorce was finalized

Esteemed actress **Emma Thompson**, decorated with Academy Awards and a damehood, has revealed a peculiar professional rejection: a date offer from **Donald Trump** that arrived on the same day her divorce was confirmed.

A Date with Destiny?

The surprising anecdote surfaced as **Thompson** was honored at the Locarno film festival in Switzerland. While filming the 1998 political satire *Primary Colors*, **Thompson** received a phone call in her trailer.

“It was **Donald Trump**,” **Thompson** recounted to the festival audience. She initially mistook his introduction, “Hello, this is **Donald Trump**.” for a prank.

After her bewildered response, “How can I help you?”, **Trump** extended an invitation: “I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.” **Thompson** politely deferred, saying, “Well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.”

Timing is Everything

The conversation gained a new dimension when **Thompson** later realized the uncanny timing. “I realised my divorce decree had come through that day,” she shared.

Speculating on **Trump**’s motives, **Thompson** quipped, “I bet he’s got people looking for a nice divorcee to take out on his arm.” She added with humor, “And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that’s stalking.”

A Different Path?

**Thompson**, a vocal supporter of environmental causes and human rights, mused on the potential ramifications of accepting the date. “I could have gone on a date with **Donald Trump**, and then I would have a story to tell,” she stated. “I could have changed the course of American history.”

The discussion also touched upon **Thompson**’s iconic role in the beloved Christmas film *Love Actually*. Her portrayal of Karen, whose marriage faces infidelity, continues to resonate with audiences.

Reflecting on the enduring appeal of the movie, **Thompson** expressed her ongoing surprise. “I mean, it’s honestly a constant source of astonishment to me that that film lasted – not that I don’t like the film. I like it very much, but it’s weird.”

She believes the film’s ability to capture the pain of heartbreak, particularly the societal pressure on women to conceal their emotions, is key to its lasting impact. “we have to hide it because we don’t want people to see it”, she explained.
