Louisville: Police officers are said to have shot black Americans

In the US state of Kentucky, police officers are said to have shot a 26-year-old African American in her apartment. The case happened in Louisville on March 13. Civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, however, only went public with the case on Monday after being commissioned by the family of the dead. The family has filed suit against the officials.

Breonna Taylor and her boyfriend were sleeping in their apartment, according to the lawyer, when the police entered for a suspect. In an anesthetic case, the officers searched for a man who no longer lived in the building and was already in custody.

The lawyer of Taylor’s friend Kenneth Walker said the police had not announced themselves when entering the apartment. Walker, who has a gun license, thought she was a burglar and shot her for self-defense. The police, in turn, said they opened the fire because an officer was shot and wounded in the apartment.

“Breonna Taylor was shot by the police at least eight times and died as a result,” said the lawsuit against the police: “Breonna had not posed a threat to the police and had done nothing to justify the death by her hand.” The police have so far not commented on the case, referring to internal investigations.

Walker is in custody

Taylor’s friend Walker was arrested for attempted murder. He is still in custody today. According to Crump, no action has been taken against the police so far. The police have not commented on the circumstances of “this tragedy”, nor have they assumed responsibility for the “senseless killing” of Taylor, said Crump.

Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said Tuesday: “My priority is to get the truth out and justice.” The case is currently being investigated. However, he pointed out that “incredibly difficult situations” could arise during police work. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized that Taylor was killed two months ago “and nothing has happened since then”.
