Well-known program maker Louis Theroux will record a special for the BBC on Joe Exotic, the subject of Netflix series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Louis visited Joe once ten years ago for an episode of his docuseries, Louis Theroux: America’s Most Dangerous Pets.

In the special, which has the working title The Cult Of Joe Exotic, Louis returns to Joe’s home state of Oklahoma to discuss with people from the life of the Tiger King what happened in the meantime. Joe is now serving a hefty jail term for plotting a contract murder and multiple animal cruelty cases, but became very popular through the Netflix series and currently has a team of lawyers trying to get him out.
“This is such a quintessentially American story, taking place in the heart of Oklahoma with a group of people who are almost too colorful and over the top to believe,” Louis said in a BBC statement. “I went there three times in 2011 and filmed there for eight or nine days. I forgot how much we recorded until I revisited those footage during the lockdown. It’s unbelievable how much we have, and the story has only gotten crazier and bigger ever since. ”
