Lottery Business Starts in Front of Bus After CITU Workers Flag Protest
Kottayam – In a surprising turn of events, the owner of a private bus in Kottayam has started selling lottery tickets in front of the same bus after CITU workers flagged a protest. Tiruvarpp Vettikulangara Rajmohan, the owner of the Vettikulangara bus operating on the Kottayam-Tiruvarpp route, has ventured into the lottery business.
Rajmohan, who recently returned from the Gulf and started his bus service, owns four buses. Besides being a bus owner, Rajmohan has also served in the army and holds the position of vice-president of the BJP’s Kumarakam constituency. The lottery sales center has been named ‘Times Square Lucky Center’, inspired by the Chief Minister’s recent address to expatriates in New York’s Times Square. Rajmohan even dressed in the same coat and suit worn by the Chief Minister during his speech.
The protest by CITU workers was in response to the non-implementation of a wage hike. However, it is important to note that only one bus worker is currently on strike, while the other three buses continue to operate. Rajmohan claims that the bus with the highest collection has been temporarily halted, while the other two buses are running at a loss and one bus is operating at a profit or loss.
A discussion held at the Kottayam Labor Office suggested increasing the employees’ salary based on the collection and conditions on the route. Consequently, the salary was increased. However, the dispute revolves around the bata to be paid upon receipt of the fixed collection. P.J. Varghese, the district president of the Motor and Mechanical Workers Union (CITU), stated that the strike is a result of the non-implementation of the salary revision.
The introduction of the lottery business by the bus owner has added another layer of complexity to the ongoing labor dispute. It remains to be seen how this development will impact the negotiations between the workers and the bus owner.
