‘Los Reyes de la Lectura’ unites parents and children at Mirador Sur

Yesterday, Monday, the day of Christian tradition consecrated to the celebration of the Holy Kings, in addition to the toys that came into the hands of children, was used by the Ministry of Education to encourage children’s reading, through the General Directorate of Culture .

This entity is in charge, as a task established in the ´National Plan for the Promotion of Books and Reading´, the execution of the ´Dominicana Lee´ program.

And yesterday’s activity, consisting of a book exchange that took place in the Parque de Mirador Sur, right at Kilometer 0, was called “The Kings of Reading.”

For the manager of Culture, José Peña, yesterday was “a gift for the Day of the Kings”, a gift with which “we exchange books and receive donations.”

Regarding the event, Peña made this exhortation to parents: “take the books that you are not going to read and take new ones home.”

In the tents erected for the occasion, set up with tables full of books, the parents who gathered at the Mirador Sur could take home up to five books, according to their taste, among them, children’s, youth and adult reading. Professor Luis Rondón, who attended the activity and had already participated in other previous activities that fulfilled his expectations, considered yesterday’s activity attractive.

“From my point of view,” he said, “it is attractive, an activity that captures the need of young people today.”

“I am a teacher and, in themselves, I am seduced by these small fairs that end up being great,” he commented.

Rondón brought English books that her daughter stopped using and, as part of the dynamic, she came out with five books, just as they all went to exchange there.

Literature at hand

Among the books that Rondón brought home are “La Odisea”, a work that contains an epic poem by the Greek poet Omero, and “Don Quixote”, written by the Spanish playwright, poet and novelist Miguel de Servantes Saavedra, and other works by national writers.

For his part, another participant, Benito Olmo, expressed his opinion on this event, stating the need to “do it more often.”

Referring to the rest of those who attended the event, he suggested that they pay attention to him, assuring that those who read “hardly get depressed; reading and the search for knowledge is the best incentive a young person can have ”and he invited young people to create the habit of reading.

Motivation to read

To encourage reading and people who came to exchange books, a tent was set up, exclusively for “letter desserts”, alluding to recitals, as well as storytelling and dramatized reading for children.

High value program

On November 15, 2021, the Ministry of Education activated the “Dominicana Lee” program, aimed at promoting reading and books in the pre-university education system.

This plan also seeks to increase digital reading through the devices that are delivered to students throughout the educational system.

According to the Minister of Education, Roberto Fulcar, “Dominicana Lee” opens the most productive and creative time in the revaluation of the book and the promotion of reading in the country, “to train new generations of avid readers and critical citizens, lovers of information and knowledge ”.
