A lorry driver has died following a major incident on the M8 motorway in Glasgow where a trailer load of timber crashed onto the carriageway.Emergency services responded to the scene near junction 25, westbound, at approximately 09:30 GMT on September 30, 2023.
The incident caused notable disruption to traffic, with the M8 westbound fully closed between junctions 24 and 26 for several hours as police investigated and worked to clear the wreckage. Authorities have confirmed that the driver of the lorry was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is likely to trigger renewed scrutiny of road safety regulations for heavy goods vehicles and the securing of loads, particularly given the potential for catastrophic consequences when timber or similar materials shift during transit.
Police Scotland stated they received report of the incident at 09:27 and immediately dispatched multiple units, including traffic officers and specialist recovery teams. A spokesperson said, “we are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward.”
The westbound carriageway remained closed for much of the day, causing extensive tailbacks and diversions. Traffic Scotland advised motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes. While one lane has as reopened, delays are expected to continue as recovery work is completed.
