A number of actors from Peter Jacksons The Hobbit– in The Lord of the Ringstrilogies have teamed up with a crowdfunding campaign to buy the late JRR Tolkien’s home in Oxford and turn it into a literary hub around the fantasy author.
The intention is to raise at least six million dollars and possibly also finance renovation work and the construction of a hobby house in the garden.
Ian McKellen (Gandalf), John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) and Martin Freeman (Bilbo), among others, support the initiative with a video on Twitter. Also Derek Jacobi, who played in the biopic Tolkien, is doing its part.
“The idea is to turn Tolkien’s home into a literary meeting place and inspire new generations of writers, artists and filmmakers,” says Rhys-Davies.
Unlike other writers of his stature, there is no centre devoted to J.R.R. Tolkien anywhere in the world. Yet. @ProjNorthmoor https://t.co/pzMg8Yk2t2 pic.twitter.com/jx2r5MVbcw
