Although the Mexico City It is the entity that has the highest number of active, accumulated infections, deaths from coronavirus (COVID-19) and has registered an increase in hospitalizations, continue on orange traffic light epidemiological alert, a situation that led some reporters to ask the Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, if this has to do with an agreement.

A question expressed by the epidemiology specialist clarified that there is no agreement with the capital’s head of government, Claudia Sheinbaum, so that the entity don’t go back to the color red.

The answer is no: the COVID risk traffic light is an objective instrument for estimating risk, it is like a thermometer, like a scale (…) it is an instrument for evaluating or measuring risk, and evaluation instruments should not be altered”López-Gatell assured this November 20 from the National Palace.

He said that “if one alters the measuring instrument” the ability to identify the phenomenon is lost studied, how in this case is the population risk of having COVID-19 infections, or spread of the disease.

He said that in the decisions made by each entity, it is very important to identify “the most convenient balance”Between the purpose of protecting health, through containment measures, and social and economic well-being.

“Even globally international organizations have this reflection on the consequences of confinement on the economy. The elements are important and both are of public interest, there should be no confusion in this regard ”, he assured.

He explained that protecting the economy does not mean safeguarding the money of rich people, but rather protecting everyone on the planet “because we depend on economic development, on the generation of wealth; since there is inequality, it is another story ”.

López-Gatell pointed out that there are nations with social inequality like Mexico, where the distribution of wealth is not uniform, in such a way, there are few rich and many poor, or those who do not reach this degree, but live from day to day.

“In this group of people who are in poverty, we must add other people who are not in poverty but live from day to day because they are not on a fixed salary, on the payroll of a private company, or on the payroll of a public institution or they do not have a long-term contract, they live a day, every day they sell a service (…) then all this population is the center of our attention, it is the main center of the government of Mexico”.

He declared that the authorities care about the 127 million inhabitants of Mexico, however, they have a greater interest in those with “fragility in economic and social terms.”

Therefore, it is important for the population to know that the management of the pandemic does not only encompass the medical sector or the biology of a disease. In this case, what intervenes is Public Health and as such, connects with social aspects.

Finally López-Gatell closed the subject stating that “the answer is no, this is not a negotiation, the traffic light is not subject to negotiation, the traffic light It is an objective instrument and it is up to the state health authority to make the most convenient decisions to balance social mobility that helps to activate or preserve the economy and social immobility that helps reduce infections.”
