Long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer – will it be Kobel?

Manuel Neuer is currently injured and will return in the summer. But what happens after the next season in Bayern’s goal?

FC Bayern wants to sign Yann Sommer in the short term (read more about this here). The record champions have already confirmed their interest in the 34-year-old. The goalkeeper from Borussia Mönchengladbach is to stand in for Manuel Neuer, who has injured his thigh, until the end of the season – and will remain a competitor afterwards.

But even Sommer is not a long-term solution due to his age, should Bayern and Neuer part ways in 2024 when the national player’s contract expires. At that point, Neuer was 38 years old, and Sommer was 36 six months later.

An advantage thanks to Julian Nagelsmann

As the “kicker” reports, according to the current status, Gregor Kobel from Borussia Dortmund should be an issue. The Swiss is said to have had contact with the record champions. Kobel’s contract with BVB runs until 2026, so a transfer would be due. And with the 25-year-old’s current learning curve, it could be an expensive deal for Bayern.

The advantage of the Munich team: Coach Julian Nagelsmann already knows Kobel from the days they spent together in Hoffenheim’s A youth team, to which he moved from Switzerland in 2014.

t-online columnist Stefan Effenberg spoke out in favor of the self-confident goalkeeper as Neuer’s successor as early as autumn 2021: “From today’s perspective, there can only be one successor for Neuer: Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel, who in the short time at BVB has already developed enormously. Whether that will be in two, three or four years: according to the current status, he is the right man for Bayern.”
