London and New York, favorite cities for expatriates

Working in these two big cities is often seen as fulfilling by expats. It also serves as a springboard for their careers. Paris is appreciated for its quality of life. Overview of the cities preferred by expatriates.

Expats like to work at London and New York. These two cities, dynamic and cosmopolitan, are acclaimed by 71% of those who make their home there, notes the ninth edition of the HSBC Expat Explorer, which surveyed 27,000 people living in 45 countries. The latter believe that their expatriation will serve as a springboard for their career. “They consider that their expatriation in one of these two cities will improve their employment prospects when they return to their country of origin or to another destination,” said the study. More than half of those polled also consider that their work is more fulfilling in these two metropolises (54% of expatriates in London and 52% in New York). And the majority of those who have settled in London (60%) praise the corporate culture, which is more interesting than that of their country of origin. Note that the survey was carried out before the vote of the Brexi, the referendum carried out in June in Great Britain and during which the British decided to leaveEuropean Union. Since then, it is possible that a certain number of employees will leave London in the coming years, in particular, the financiers working in the City’s banks.

Dubai, Hong Kong, Zurich and Shanghai offer significant salaries

Expats living in Toronto and Sydney also feel good there, underlines the study of HSBC. The large city on the Canadian east coast and the Australian capital both appeal for their quality of life. “Almost 60% of expats living in Sydney say they are more active and three-quarters (77%) say they have adapted well to the population and the local culture,” says the HSBC study. Even though winters there are harsh, Toronto attracts more expats over the age of 55 (they represent 51% of the city’s expat population).

Dubai, Hong Kong, Zurich and Shanghai they stand out for the financial perspectives they offer to foreigners who choose to work there. “Almost two-thirds of expatriates living in Dubai (65%) or Hong Kong (68%) have experienced an increase in their level of income, compared to an average of 56% of expatriates who have taken up residence elsewhere in the world”, indicates the HSBC study. In Zurich, almost half of expatriates (44%) earn more than $ 200,000 per year. A record. They are only 11% in this case, elsewhere in the world.

Appreciated for its quality of life, France has gained 8 places in one year

Finally, Paris is also honored by the foreigners who work there. “Three quarters (77%) of expatriates appreciate the ease of integration into French culture (they are only 61% on average in other countries)”, notes the British bank. The city of light is also appreciated by students. “Nearly 25% come to study there against an average of 10% in the world”.

The France which has been losing places in recent years, has gained 8 places compared to the 2015 ranking. It now climbs to 21st place among the countries preferred by expatriates. Even if the latter “consider the economic prospects of the country as unattractive as ever, the improvement in criteria linked to the quality of life is pulling it upwards”, write the authors of the study. France thus goes from 14th place to 9th on criteria such as: daily quality of life, ease of integration into society, the health system, housing facilities. Surprisingly, two-thirds of expatriates in France have invested there inimmovable, against 32% on average worldwide, ranking France in first position among European countries. It should be noted that the investigation was carried out at the beginning of the year, before the series of attacks that plagued the country during the summer, including that of Nice.

Unbeatable singapore

Singapore is unbeatable. For the second year in a row, it is voted by global expats as the best country to live and work for global expats. Those who live in the South Asian city state praise the quality of life and the safety. They also of course highlight the good prospects for career advancement and high salaries. These average $ 139,000 per year. Then come the New Zealand, the Canada, the Czech Republic, the Suisse and the Norway. L’Germany comes in tenth position.
