Lokomotiv Moscow was shocked on Monday by the death of Innokenti Samochvalov. The 22-year-old Russian defender died after becoming unwell during an individual training session.
“He felt bad during an individual training session. The circumstances are currently being investigated,” Lokomotiv writes on its own website.
Samochvalov has been under contract with Lokomotiv Moscow, one of Russia’s major clubs since 2015, but he never made it to the first team. He has played for Kazanka, Lokomotiv’s B team active in the third level in recent years.
His coach at Kazanka, Alexander Grishin, gave to the Russian website R-Sport to know that Samochvalov has been affected by cardiac arrest, but the club has not yet made any announcements about it.
Samochvalov leaves behind a wife and a son. “Innokenti was a friendly and sympathetic man, a good friend. This is a great sorrow for our family,” said Lokomotiv.
The footballers in Russia are expected to train individually, as the Premjer League is currently, like almost all other European leagues, frozen due to the corona crisis. It is still unclear whether there can still be played this season.
