Stahl’s biggest rival from the last championship, Jamaican Fedrick Dacres, dropped out in an unsuccessful qualification, in fact even earlier, when he injured his wrist and had to have surgery.
Twenty-eight-year-old Stahl didn’t even qualify for the previous games, but has won silver and gold at the World Cup ever since. Every year he finishes in first place in the world tables and this year he lost only one of thirteen starts, at home in Växjö with Pettersson.

In a second attempt in the final, he sent a two-kilogram disc to a distance of 68.90, which earned his country the first athletic gold at the Games since 2004. Pettersson moved to the silver medal in the penultimate series with a 67.39 long throw. To celebrate the double triumph, the ABBA hit was a half-empty stadium.
Australian Matthew Denny moved up to fourth place thanks to a personal record in the last series of 67.02. The Slovenian Kristjan Čeh, who is already a member of the elite club of 70-meter discusters at the age of 22, ended up behind him. Lithuanian world champion from 2017 Andrius Guji has had to settle for sixth place.
