The Netherlands could slowly lift the lockdown for people under fifty. The chance that they will die from corona is extremely small, say researchers at the UvA, about which EenVandaag reports.
There are more than ten million people under the age of fifty in the Netherlands. Among this group, the mortality rate is 0.014 percent. This means that if this group were infected at once, a maximum of 1,400 people would die. If we protect people with underlying conditions within this group, the percentage will drop even further, ‘says Ed Peelen, professor by special appointment of content marketing at the University of Amsterdam.
“Don’t suddenly let go of everything”
The lockdown should not be released at once, it should be done ‘smartly’, the researchers say. “You will not suddenly have to let go of everything, for example you can stick to the ban of large events and continue to monitor,” says Peelen. “And keep looking: what about the manageability of the IC capacity?”
‘Thirties can cut in their twenties’
Market researcher and data specialist Richard van Pelt, who also participated in the research, is pleased that the schools are opening again. “But as far as we are concerned, you could go further and further. A person in their twenties can easily be cut by a person in their thirties, without having to take extra measures. ‘
According to Van Pelt, means such as mouth masks are mainly to protect the elderly; young people among themselves should not use them.
Over-50s on a voluntary basis also from lockdown
The researchers’ calculations show that the number of expected corona deaths quadruples if people between fifty and sixty years old also lock out.
The researchers do think that people over 50 could participate in such an ‘unlock’ without complaints on a voluntary basis.
