Local containment, vaccine: a strategic plan drafted by the federal government to manage a second wave

An 83-page roadmap details the government’s long-term ambitions, including the policy of purchasing and distributing a future vaccine against the coronavirus, which is still unavailable for the moment.

Lhe federal government has drafted, at the initiative of the office of Minister of Health Maggie De Block, a strategic plan to deal with a second wave of contamination by the coronavirus in Belgium and to avoid the errors of the first wave, reports Thursday RTBF, which was able to obtain the document.

This 83-page roadmap details the government’s long-term ambitions, including the policy of purchasing and distributing a future vaccine against the coronavirus, which is still unavailable for the moment. The authorities are also focusing on the management of seasonal influenza.

The strategy, developed with numerous experts, in particular from Sciensano, the FPS Public Health but also the Federal Medicines Agency or the National Institute of Sickness and Invalidity Insurance (Inami), is broken down into two axes: the daily management of new infections and the anticipation of a new wave.

The plan provides for targeted measures to be applied automatically when a specified threshold is crossed, such as local, regional or national containment. It also addresses issues of funding and decisions regarding equipment, the number of hospital beds and ventilators available, strengthening of mobile hospital teams and accessibility to psychological care.

In total, the budgetary impact of this plan is estimated at just over 35 million euros in 2020, 45.5 million euros in 2021 and some 42.7 million euros on a structural basis.

Elements included in the plan are already being implemented. The intention is also to simplify the current governance.
