Liverpool often make extraordinary comebacks in European competitions. Facing Real Madrid, can the Reds do it again?
Liverpool are in a difficult position during the second leg of the quarter-finals Champions League against Madrid at Anfield, Thursday (4/15/2021) early morning WIB tomorrow. They are 1-3 behind on aggregate.
Indeed, there was Mohamed Salah’s goal that kept Liverpool’s chances of qualifying, as long as he was able to win two goals without reply. But, looking at the current performance of the Reds’ home, it feels like the mission is difficult.
Because, Liverpool have only won once at Anfield in the last four months in all competitions. Although Liverpool really shouldn’t be pessimistic either, because history says otherwise.
When in a pinched position in European competition, Liverpool often make miracles. The 2005 Champions League final was an example when they beat AC Milan on penalties, after trailing 0-3 in the first half.
Then, in the second leg of the 2015/2016 Europa League semi-final, when he knocked out Borussia Dortmund through a late goal and won 4-3. Even though when 25 minutes were still left, Liverpool were behind 2-4 on aggregate.
Finally, the public certainly hasn’t forgotten the time to get rid of the Spanish giants as well as the five-time Champions League champions, Barcelona, through a 4-0 win in the semi-final second leg two seasons ago. Liverpool even though they lost 0-3 in the first leg.
“You never expect that to happen again. Never and shouldn’t at all,” said the manager Jürgen Klopp of Sport24.
“Not that you can comeback again because you have done before. You have a chance if you really play very well at the moment and that’s what we have to do,” he continued.
“The good thing is that we don’t need to make a comeback. But, it’s worth discussing that at this time, too.”
