Live the summer with art


Summer goes on and the Ministry of Culture of Jalisco and the Cabañas museum have prepared a series of activities to enjoy it full of art through workshops, film series, talks and other activities, such as the guided tours of the main chapel of Cabañas, which can be requested in English and in the Wixárika language, at the Visitor Services office, located just to the right of the museum entrance. These are held from Tuesday to Sunday, at the following times: 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm; and in English at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Let’s talk about Muralism

The Cabañas museum is preparing the seminar “Against program art: critical humanism in the work of José Clemente Orozco”, as part of the program that celebrates the Centennial of Mexican Muralism; It will be taught by the teacher Aldo Carbajal, on August 20, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Those attending this seminar will see the figures and images that are distinctive of the work of Clemente Orozco -in the photo- and that show his critical and humanist position.

The activity will be in person and admission will be free.

exhibitions

“Take over all the walls. Drafts by José Clemente Orozco”. The Cabañas museum is the house of José Clemente Orozco and houses not only one of the most important mural complexes of the muralist movement in its main chapel, but also has a collection of sketches by the artist from Jalisco. This sample is made up of a collection of 340 pieces. Of this set, 221 works are mural studies. This set of sketches covers a chronological period from 1922 to 1947.

“We are experiencing a fault in this area. Sorry for the inconvenience”. Collective exhibition of contemporary art, curated by Yuriko Cortes Salcedo. These are visual reflections mainly on the use of the Internet, the unstoppable consumption of images and the obsession with popular culture (series, characters, music bands and movies) from a too recent past, which traps us in a nostalgic loop. The feelings of depression and nostalgia that are experienced today around lost futures are exposed in this exhibition.

“Lu’ Biaani. Francisco Toledo and photography”. Armed exhibition in collaboration with the Manuel Álvarez Bravo Photographic Center, the Colegio de San Ildefonso and the National Institute of Fine Arts and Literature; It is a review of the photography collection gathered by Francisco Toledo throughout his life, as well as works by Toledo himself in photography. With the participation of the guest curator, Alejandro Castellanos, the exhibition will cover various genres, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day. It is made up of photographs, documents and artistic pieces and installations, all part of the collection of the Manuel Álvarez Bravo Photographic Center in Oaxaca.

Noise and Disaster Orchestra

The artistic group Nine Corners offers a concert where improvisation is present. The show consists of the performance of various key improvisers with experience, who participate in various formats: duets, trios, quartets, culminating in the participation of all the cast members.

Let’s go to the cinema

For this month, Cabañas prepared a double program: the first within the framework of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples where the public will enjoy contemporary Mexican films that allow them to learn more about the roots and customs of Mexico.

The second is a program in collaboration with the Department of Audiovisual Arts of the Ministry of Culture to commemorate the National Day of Mexican Cinema, with a selection of contemporary short films and feature films that bring attendees closer to the State’s film productions.

“Uncle Yim” (2019-Mexico)

This documentary addresses the life of Jaime Martínez Luna, Zapotec singer-songwriter, leader and thinker in the Sierra de Juárez region; all through the critical and sensitive gaze of his daughter, Luna Marán.

In a small, forgotten town surrounded by tree-covered mountains, lives a little boy and his mother. The traditional life of the city has been uprooted since it was caught in the crossfire of the war between the military and the cartels.

“The dream of the Mara’akame” (2016-Mexico)

Nieri is a young Huichol whose dream is to travel with his musical band to play a concert in Mexico City, but his father, a mara’akame (Huichol shaman), has other plans for him.

In Huautla de Jiménez, land of Oaxaca, lives the spirit of a cosmic woman: María Sabina. People can see her, talk to her, and also be healed from beyond her. In that town lives José Ángel, a 12-year-old boy, heir to the tradition.

Paty, an indigenous woman from the Wixárika people, begins a journey that keeps her absent for long periods, by representing her community in the Indigenous Governing Council; Meanwhile, her husband, Rubén, takes care of her daughters.

“Silk” tells the story of a chemist-pharmacologist who invents a drug called silk, which erases the memory of its victim and makes it possible to reprogram it. This drug allows the character to create the perfect person he is looking for.
