AMMAN – King Abdullah of Jordan and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held a billateral meeting in Aqaba, Jordan, yesterday. The two leaders are very hopeful of the peace talks the Palestinian-Israeli conflict can again be supported by the government of the United States (US) which will soon be taken over by president-elect Joe Biden in 2021.

King Abdullah said he strongly supported the Palestinian statement. He also should be optimistic considering that Biden is acting more mature, diplomatic and refined than President Donald Trump. Previously, King Abdullah regretted the attitude taken by Trump and Israel which acted unilaterally in overcoming various issues in the Palestinian region, especially in the West Bank. “What Starts King Abdullah emphasized that Jordan will fully support and provide assistance to the Palestinians in pursuing their right to become an independent state,” said the Kingdom of Jordan, quoted by Reuters. “While speaking by telephone, he also asked Biden to support a two-state solution in resolving the Palestinian conflict.”

Trump’s US has stripped away all of the peace negotiations it has reached over decades, from recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital to permitting Israel to annex the West Bank. The move sparked protests in Palestine and other Muslim-populated countries. Additionally, experts say Trump’s overt approach has killed the peace talks.

US diplomats say Jordan is a country of friendship and is also the first country to congratulate the elected president of the US, including to Biden. King Abdulllah said Trump’s policy of always agreeing with the right-wing policies of Israeli Prime Minister (PM) Benjamin Netanyahu has created conflict and distanced peace. Trump’s peace plan has always been on the side of Israel. Palestine is not even considered, cared for, and given rights. Apart from harming Palestine, Trump’s peace plan also harms other countries close to Palestine. With the spread of land grabbing in the West Bank, local residents were also planned to migrate to Jordan.

The West Bank was originally Jordan territory, including East Jerusalem. However, the area fell to Israel after Jordan lost deeply Arab-Israeli Warin 1967. At that time, many Palestinians migrated to Jordan. Although different regions, Jordan has blood relations with Palestine.

“Israel is now working to expand its annexation of territory and accelerate the construction of settlements in the occupied territories of the West Bank,” King Abdullah and Abbas said in a joint statement. Over the past 5 years, Trump acknowledged the development was a legitimate act and did not violate international law after many countries protested.

Abbas, who cut ties with Trump about three years ago, considered Trump to be pro-Israel so that the US was no longer worthy of mediating the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. He will now travel to Cairo, Egypt, to seek support for restoring peace talks in accordance with a two-state solution. Palestine also had asked Russia to become a mediator, but was rejected twice by the US and Israel. (Also read: Next year’s lecture applies a mixture of face-to-face and online)

This effort has received support from the United Nations (UN). The UN Secretary General (Secretary General), Antonio Guterres, urged the Palestinian and Israeli governments to find common ground in building peace. He warned other countries not to confuse the situation and remain restrained so that the two-state solution runs smoothly.

“Many factors continue to undermine the peace negotiation process, from the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements, the eviction of Palestinian homes and military violence,” said Guterres. “The leaders of Palestine and Israel have a big responsibility to guard their people and explore every gap of peace in order to achieve fair and peaceful negotiations.” (Muh Shamil)
