PL3 analysis

The thirty minutes of Free Practice 3 in Portimao, irrelevant for the formation of the qualifying groups, saw the MotoGP riders prepare tires and set-ups in view of the Sprint and the race. The fastest was Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46), while good sensations on the pace were given by Quartararo (Yamaha), Bagnaia (Ducati) and the Aprilias of Aleix Espargarò and Maverick Vinales.
Finally, the crashes – without consequences – of Marini (Ducati VR46), Bastianini (Ducati), Bagnaia (Ducati).

11.40 – Checkered flag for the PL3 of Portimao – Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46) closes in the lead, ahead of Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) and Aleix Espargarò (Aprilia).

11.35 – Crash for Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) in Turn 1. Long crash by the Italian after losing the front end in setting up.

11.31 – Guizzo di Bagnaia (Ducati, MS), who climbed the rankings up to third position, in 1’38.803. Luca Marini (Ducati VR46, SS) rejoined the track after a crash on the warm-up lap.
Enea Bastianini (Ducati) crash in Turn 5. The Italian is in ninth position.

11.30 – Ten minutes to go and leaderboard positions unchanged. To note the difficulties of Marc Marquez (Honda), only 16th in 1’39.426.

11.27 – Fourth position for Miguel Oliveira (Aprilia RNF) in 1’38.985, just over four tenths behind the leader Bezzecchi. Luca Marini (Ducati VR46) has not yet returned to the track.

11.25 – Ranking top10 PL3 Portimao after 15 minutes (half session):
1. Bezzecchi 1’38.577
2. Quarter +0.1
3. Alex Marquez +0.2
4. Vinales +0.4
5. Martin +0.4
6. Bastianini +0.4
7. Bagnaia +0.4
8. Oliveira +0.5
9. Mir +0.5
10. Nakagami +0.5.

11.22 – Maveirck Vinales (Aprilia, SM) was also fast, now in fourth position. The feeling is that the riders are trying out the tire combination to use for the Sprint and the race. We remind you that the current PL3 session has no value for the formation of the groups participating in Q1 and Q2.

11.20 – Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46., MS) is the new leader in 1’38.577, followed by Quartararo (Yamaha), Alex Marquez (Ducati Gresini), Martin (Ducati Prima Pramac) and Bastianini (Ducati).

11.18 – Very constant Quartararo (Yamaha, MM) in 1’38.726, one tenth behind him is Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46, SM), three tenths behind Bagnaia (Ducati, MS).

11.16 – 1’39.137 for Bagnaia (Ducati, MS), better than him Quartararo (Yamaha, MM) in 1’38.768.

11.14 – In the lead Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha, MM) in 1’39.393, followed by Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46) and Bagnaia (Ducati).

11.10 – Green light for Portimao PL3 – Luca Marini (Ducati VR46) immediately crashed, probably after a contact with Jack Miller (KTM).

10.55 – The first update this Saturday is good news in terms of safety on the track: after a rather heated Safety Commission, the air fences have been positioned at Turn 10, scene of Pol Espargarò’s (GasGas) accident yesterday.

The first day of the Portuguese Grand Prix weekend saw the debut of the new MotoGP format, with the two Free Practice sessions making up the list of ten riders who obtained thedirect access to Q2. The best time was unexpectedly set by Jack Miller (KTM), who broke the track record in 1’37.709, behind him Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) and ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia (Ducati). Rounding out the top10 Luca Marini (Ducati VR46), George Martin (Ducati Before Pramac), Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha), Johann Zarco (Ducati Before Pramac), Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati VR46), Alex Espargaro (Aprilia) Ed Aeneas Bastianini (Ducati). Honda is the big disappointment of the day, having placed nobody in the top ten and with Marc Marquez (Honda) only fourteenth. Unlike what happened in previous years, the Saturday morning PL3 will have no value in defining the combined top10. Finally, the bad crash of Pol Espargarò (GasGas) should be noted, with the Spanish rider currently hospitalized in Faro hospital with a fractured dorsal vertebra, a fractured jaw and a pulmonary contusion and who will obviously be absent for the rest of the weekend.
