LIVE | Primary school teachers fear problems for students Inland

One in three primary school teachers expect major problems for students if they are still at home for four weeks. If the schools remain closed until the summer holidays, three-quarters of the teachers expect major problems for pupils. This is reported by DUO Education Research & Advice after research in collaboration with education journal Didactief.

The teachers fear, among other things, that the motivation of students will decrease, that distance learning demands too much from parents, that students with a disadvantage only fall behind more and that especially weak students will be affected. The teachers are very positive about the efforts of their students. According to the teachers, nearly three-quarters (73 percent) are working at home seriously, and nearly one in five (18 percent) is fairly serious. One in fourteen children (7 percent) would have a hard time at home, and with a small group of 2 percent, the teachers have no contact.

Almost all teachers (94 percent) currently provide distance learning. Student software in particular is used, 89 percent use it. Nearly two in three teachers (64 percent) have students or their parents collect paper teaching materials from school, and one in seven teachers (15 percent) bring the teaching materials to their students. The core subjects arithmetic, language and reading receive the most attention, world orientation (geography, history, biology) and creative subjects are less discussed.

The survey was conducted this week among 606 teachers who teach grades 3 through 8 at a primary school.
