LIVE | Israeli Government Agrees Three Week Lockdown | Inland

The Israeli government has agreed on Sunday evening to a new lockdown, which will last three weeks, according to national media. The measure to prevent further spread of the corona virus will start on Friday, just before Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

Channel 12 reported that Israelis are not allowed to go further than 500 meters from their home during the lockdown. According to another channel, Ben Gurion airport will remain open.

Since the end of August, the number of new corona infections in Israel has been rising alarmingly. On Sunday, more than a thousand cases of infection were added. The day before, there were more than 4000. In total, more than 150,000 Israelis have contracted the virus. More than 1100 patients died from the consequences.

The Minister of Housing Yaakov Litzman did not wait for the cabinet decision and resigned in protest against the announcement of a second national lockdown. Litzman is a member of the ultra-Orthodox Torah Judaism party. Locking the land again, he says, does not show respect for Jewish holidays. The celebration of Yom Kippur, the most important Jewish religious holiday starting September 27, is also hit hard.
