Germans have also been confronted with grim statistics about the coronavirus on the first day of the new year. The death toll from the virus outbreak rose by 553 to 33,624 in one day, reports the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the German counterpart of the RIVM.
The RKI reported that despite the lockdown, almost 23,000 new corona infections have also been diagnosed. The German authorities have registered more than 1.7 million corona cases since the start of the pandemic. That number is lower than in other major European countries, such as France (2.6 million), the United Kingdom (2.4 million), Italy (2.1 million) and Spain (1.9 million).
Germany reported a record number of deaths just before the turn of the year. The RKI registered on December 30 that another 1129 patients with the coronavirus had died. It was the first time since the start of the pandemic that more than 1,000 deaths had been reported in a day.
