Live | England and Austria largely in lockdown | Inland

In the fight against the corona virus, England with its more than 56 million inhabitants is largely locked for the second time. The new lockdown will start on Thursday and will last until December 2, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Saturday. He says he wants to prevent doctors and nurses from being forced to choose which patients they can still treat with the measure.

All unnecessary shops must be closed. But unlike last spring’s lockdown, educational institutions, such as schools and universities, are allowed to remain open.

Almost 22,000 new coronavirus infections were registered for the United Kingdom on Saturday. As a result, the number of infections has risen to over 1 million since the start of the pandemic. The British death toll is creeping towards fifty thousand.

Austria also locked

Austria will largely be locked again from Tuesday. The new lockdown includes a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. to slow the spread of the virus. The intention is to ease the lockdown step by step in December, according to government leader Kurz. The Austrian government wants to prevent hospitals from becoming overloaded with the new lockdown.

Restaurants have to close and can only have meals taken out, in hotels only business people are allowed. Secondary schools and higher schools and universities are moving back to distance education, as during the first lockdown earlier this year. Primary schools and shops, on the other hand, will remain open.

Large parts of Portugal will also be partly locked again. Working from home will be the rule. Residents may only go outside for work, school or shopping. The lockdown affects 70 percent of the population, including residents of the major cities of Lisbon and Porto.
