LIVE | Coronavirus mortality in the south 8 times higher than in the north | Inland

The first wave of corona infections has claimed significantly more lives in the southern provinces than in the rest of the country. It was well known that the south was hit the hardest, but the Central Bureau of Statistics shows with regional figures how big the differences are. Relatively speaking, the Southern Netherlands had more than eight times as many corona victims as the Northern Netherlands.

Statistics Netherlands previously announced that from the beginning of March to the end of June a total of more than 10,000 Dutch people died of the virus. Many elderly people in particular lost their lives after being infected with corona. According to the new figures, 3,861 of all deceased came from the south of the Netherlands (Noord-Brabant and Limburg).

When compared to the total population size, it becomes clear that the south was much more affected than other parts of the country. 105 people died of Covid-19 per 100,000 inhabitants in Brabant and Limburg. In the east of the Netherlands (Overijssel, Flevoland and Gelderland), 57 people per 100,000 inhabitants died, in the west of the Netherlands (Utrecht, North Holland, South Holland and Zeeland) 47. In the north of the Netherlands (Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe) the mortality from corona is lowest with 12 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

The GGD region Hart voor Brabant, which includes Tilburg, Den Bosch, Uden, Oss and Waalwijk, had the most deaths: more than 1,400. South Limburg was hit roughly as hard in relation to the size of the population.

Of all Dutch people who died between the beginning of March and the end of June, one in six died of Covid-19. In the GGD region Hart voor Brabant this was even one in three.

The CBS also calculates that the majority of people who died of corona infection received long-term care. The statistics agency previously announced that the average age of deceased men diagnosed with Covid-19 was 79.7 years. Women who died of the disease averaged 83.8 years. That is roughly in line with the average life expectancy of the Dutch.
