LIVE | Belgium expects first vaccines at the end of December, US in December | Inland

Belgium expects to have access to the first corona vaccines from the end of December. But the lion’s share will only come in the second and third quarters of 2021, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said on Sunday in the television program De Zevende Dag.

Belgium has subscribed for four vaccines via the European Union. Just as in the Netherlands and other countries, the vaccination will be done gradually once a vaccine has been approved. The first vaccines go to healthcare workers and vulnerable groups.

“We still have to be cautious for a relatively long period,” the prime minister tempered expectations. According to De Croo, the corona figures in Belgium are moving in the right direction, but he reiterated the message that a third wave, a ‘Christmas wave’, must be absolutely avoided.

Minister of Health Frank Vandenbroucke also warned against this. “A donkey must not hit the same stone twice.” He is confident that the distribution of the vaccines will proceed smoothly under the leadership of a task force. “If it doesn’t work, you can shoot me,” said Vandenbroucke.

US expects first corona vaccinations in December

The United States expects to vaccinate the first Americans with a corona vaccine in the course of December. The head of the US massive vaccination operation, Moncef Slaoui, told CNN on Sunday.

The plan is to have vaccines delivered to inoculation sites by the US drug watchdog FDA within 24 hours of approval, said the immunologist who leads surgery “Warp Speed.” He hopes that vaccinations can start “maybe on December 11th or December 12th”.

FDA advisers will meet from Dec. 8-10 to assess whether Pfizer and Moderna vaccines can be accelerated for approval.
