Lithuanians prepare for “Freedom Road” campaign in support of Belarus – Abroad – News

It is expected that on August 23, the anniversary of the historic Baltic Way, at 19.00, about 50,000 people will stand side by side from the Cathedral Square of the Lithuanian capital to the Medininkai checkpoint at the Belarusian border.

Lithuanian public radio will help to coordinate the flow of “Freedom Road” participants, but public television will also provide live broadcasting.

Lithuanian President Gitan Nauseda, his predecessors Daļa Grībauskaite and Valds Adamkus, as well as Belarusian opposition candidate Svetlana Tihanovska, who will address the people in Lithuanian on August 9, will take part in the live broadcast of the Internet television “Laisves TV”.

A balloon with a huge, 15-meter-long white-red-white flag of freedom of Belarus will rise in the sky near Vilnius Cathedral, which will probably be visible from the territory of Lithuania on the other side of the border.

People are invited to dress in white and take with them white or red gladiolus, which has become a symbol of peaceful protests in Belarus. For the purpose of Covid-19 prevention, each participant is invited to be in the right place and does not forget about personal protective equipment.

At the end of the campaign, a concert will take place in the courtyard of Medininkai Castle, built in the 14th century, near the Belarusian border, with the participation of the most famous Lithuanian musicians, who will confirm their support for Belarus in their songs.

The concert, which will be broadcast on Lithuanian public television, is intended as a donation marathon for the Belarusian public organization “BY_Help”, which has been supporting the families of repressed victims since 2017 and paying fines for those detained by the authorities, but also collects donations for medicines, transport and communications. services.

The Baltic Way has become a symbol of a peaceful resistance movement in the world. In 2004, people in Taiwan joined hands to protest China’s military threat, in 2013 a similar campaign was agreed by Catalans seeking independence from Spain, and last year thousands of people in Hong Kong formed a 40-kilometer chain to protest China’s interference in territorial autonomy.
