Lithuania continues to monitor its border with Belarus closely. An army is also involved, and soldiers are sent to the border to provide support to the border guards. A few weeks ago, there were increased attempts by migrants to enter the country, now the situation is calmer, but practically every day dozens of people are still trying to enter Lithuania illegally from Belarus.
“The flows are not very big, but there are currently attempts to cross the border in small groups. The groups are being separated and they are trying to cross the state border at different points, so we must be ready to prevent migrants from entering different places, “says Virgilijs Raugale, Commander of the Lithuanian Border Guard Unit.
This is where the borders of three countries meet – Lithuania, Belarus and Poland. At this point, a soldier’s post is also on the side of the Polish border, right across the river from the Lithuanian post. On the Belarusian side, there are things left behind by migrants.
The Lithuanian Minister of the Interior visited the place yesterday, warning that border checkpoints with Belarus could be closed. A few days ago, Lithuanian border guards found four migrants from Iraq in a trailer carrying a truck of peat from Belarus at a border checkpoint in Medininkai.
“There are attempts to enter trucks in Lithuania, so it has been decided to intensify vehicle inspections. If we see that this trend will increase, we will definitely consider closing the border checkpoints very seriously, ”says Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite.
It is impossible to relax and the crisis is not over, said the Lithuanian Minister of the Interior. She estimated that there are still seven to 15 thousand migrants in Belarus, but up to two thousand just outside the Lithuanian-Polish border, and the situation may change at any time.
