American writer Mary Higgins Clark died peacefully Friday night in Naples, Florida of natural causes, surrounded by family and friends, her publishing house Simon & Schuster announced on Twitter. The “queen of suspense” was 92 years old.

“No one has ever been more attached to its readers than Mary,” said longtime editor Michael Korda in a statement quoted by the AP agency. “She understood them as if they were members of her own family. She was always absolutely sure what they wanted to read – and, perhaps more importantly, what they didn’t want to read – and yet she managed to surprise them every time. ”
The writer was particularly appreciated for her female heroines triumphing over danger.
Widowed at 36, mother of five, she became a successful author during the second half of her life, writing or co-writing, especially with her daughter Carol, more than 50 best-sellers, often adapted to the screen – cinema or television. Sales of his books have exceeded 100 million copies.
