KOMPAS.TV – Having a supply of medicine at home will indeed help when an urgent condition occurs. However, before consuming drugs that were previously stored, it’s a good idea to check the expiration date again.
Expired medicine or expired are not effective for treating disease, and can even pose serious health risks.
In addition to the expiration date, also pay attention to the condition of the drug whether it is still suitable for consumption. The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) stated that there are several causes of damaged drugs, including:
- Stored in a damp place.
- Exposed to sunlight.
- Incorrect storage temperature.
- Inadvertently often shaken.
Drugs that are past the stated expiration date, damaged packaging (broken, cracked, perforated), and missing, incomplete or illegible labels on the packaging are generally no longer allowed to be consumed.
The following are the characteristics of expired drugs according to: Badan POM RI:
1. Characteristics of expired medicine in tablet form
- Changes color, smell and taste.
- There are stains/spots on the surface of the medicine.
- The medicine changes in texture to become softer, sticky, or even crumbles.
2. Characteristics of expired medicine in capsule form
- Changes in color, smell and taste.
- The capsules become mushy and sticky.
- The capsule shell is attached to the outer packaging.
3. The characteristics of expired drugs in syrup or liquid form
- Changes in color, smell and taste.
- The liquid becomes more turbid or thicker.
- The liquid settles and separates.
- Damp or dewy finish.
To prevent the use of expired drugs, do regular sorting of drugs, and provide clear records to distinguish the expiration date of each type of drug.
