“Avatar 2” now ahead of “Star Wars”

Avatar 2 has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The sci-fi epic is now the fourth highest-grossing film.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is still on the road to success: As “Variety” reportsthe work of James Cameron (68) has now made it to fourth place among the most commercially successful films. “Avatar 2” has grossed $2.075 billion at the box office to date. The epic has thus overtaken its sci-fi colleague “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, which finished the race after its theatrical release in December 2015 with 2.064 billion US dollars.
With the new milestone can Cameron now write his name behind three of the four highest-grossing films in history. “Avatar” (2.92 billion) continues to top the list, while “Titanic” (2.2 billion) is in third place. “Avengers: Endgame” is in second place. To oust the film, “Avatar 2” would have to surpass the $2.79 billion mark.
sequels planned
According to its creator, the epic sci-fi saga will have at least three more sequels. This plan seems much more realistic with the continued strong ticket sales. It is not known how many “Avatar: The Way of Water” cost exactly. In an interview with “GQ” Cameron said it was “really bloody expensive” to produce.
The still unnamed third part has already been shot, it was created parallel to “Avatar: The Way of Water” and is scheduled to hit the cinemas on December 18, 2024.
