Lisbon Funicular Crash Leaves At Least 15 Dead, Dozens Injured
Lisbon, Portugal – A historic funicular in Lisbon derailed Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people and leaving dozens more injured, according to reports from Reuters and Bloomberg. The incident occurred on the Gloria funicular, a popular tourist attraction connecting Lisbon’s downtown with the Bairro Alto district.
The crash has prompted an immediate examination into the cause, though authorities state that “all maintenance protocols have been carried out,” including monthly, weekly, and daily inspections, according to a statement released by operator Carris. The Gloria funicular, opened in 1885, is a vital part of Lisbon’s public transport network and a notable cultural landmark, carrying approximately three million passengers annually since being classified as a national monument over two decades ago.
The funicular, capable of transporting up to 43 passengers, operates using two cars connected by a haulage cable and powered by electric motors. User-generated video footage broadcast by CNN Portugal showed the car at the bottom of the line jolting violently as the other derailed, with passengers reportedly jumping from windows and shouting.
While the car at the bottom of the line sustained no apparent damage, emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. The Gloria funicular is operated by Carris, Lisbon’s municipal public transport company.Further updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.
