Six were admitted to intensive care, while three suffered minor wounds. The victims represent a diverse range of nationalities, including Portuguese, German, South Korean, Swiss, Cape Verdean, and Moroccan citizens. Spanish,Israeli,Brazilian,italian,and French nationals were also among those affected.
initial reports incorrectly indicated a fatality within a German family traveling on the funicular. Police clarified Friday that a German citizen initially identified as deceased was found alive and receiving hospital care. the mother of the family remains in critical condition, and their three-year-old son sustained minor injuries.
A brake guard employed by the funicular company is among the 16 confirmed fatalities. Portuguese media outlets report the car was traveling at an excessive speed when it lost control near the Praça dos Restauradores. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the car careened down the hill, colliding with pedestrians before derailing.
