Messi Confirms 2026 world Cup Participation, Criticizes International Scheduling
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Lionel Messi has affirmed his intention to compete in the 2026 World Cup, dismissing any speculation about retirement and signaling his continued commitment to the Argentina national team. The Inter Miami captain also voiced strong criticism of the international match calendar, specifically regarding the scheduling of the Finalissima against Spain.
Messi’s confirmation comes amid a demanding schedule for both Inter Miami – with upcoming league and Concachampions games – and the Argentine national team. The 2026 world Cup will be notably significant as it is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, offering Messi the chance to possibly play a major international tournament closer to his current club base. His continued presence is crucial for Argentina, who will be aiming to defend their World Cup title.
“The truth is that we have been talking about it.He understands too and we talk about it a lot,” Messi revealed, describing ongoing conversations with Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni. “We have been talking about it for a long time and he always tells me that for his sake he would like me to be wherever I am or whatever. We have a very trusting relationship and we can talk about everything.” Scaloni has repeatedly stated his desire to include Messi in future squads, respecting the player’s final decision.
Looking ahead,Argentina’s preparations include the Finalissima against Spain,a match messi believes should have been scheduled after the World Cup. “I would have preferred not to play it before the World Cup,there was time to do it before. Spain couldn’t because of the Nations League, which they invented, and South america killed us,” he stated. The Finalissima, contested between the winners of the Copa América and the UEFA European Championship, currently lacks a confirmed date.
