Like father, like son: when two generations meet in the Bundesliga

Now also goalscorer for Dortmund: Giovanni Reyna.

There are quite a few fathers and sons who were each active in the Bundesliga. And fathers and sons, who both scored goals in the German upper house, are also not that rare.

Kassel – Currently there are exactly seven players still active in the Bundesliga who have already scored a goal – and whose fathers have also made it. Before the second matchday, which opened yesterday with the game Hertha BSC against Frankfurt, we are looking at successful duos.

The Reynas

Giovanni Reyna (17) has just recently added himself to this list. Claudio Reyna’s son, who made 74 Bundesliga appearances for Bayer Leverkusen and VfL Wolfsburg, scored 1-0 for Dortmund against Mönchengladbach on matchday one – and for the first time in the German elite class. Papa Claudio was successful a total of six times and is now 47 years old and sports director of Austin FC (USA). Son Giovanni could add more today in Augsburg (3:30 p.m.).

The Klaus’

Felix Klaus from VfL Wolfsburg also has a father who knows the Bundesliga – and has played 29 games for Nuremberg, Hertha BSC and HSV. Fred Klaus (53) scored three goals. Felix (28) has scored 15 goals so far – including the first in Greuther Fürth’s Bundesliga history. Tomorrow he competes with VfL in Freiburg (6 p.m.).

Die Kohrs

And there is also a Frankfurter on this list. Until yesterday evening Dominik Kohr (26) scored four goals for Leverkusen, Augsburg and Eintracht in the Bundesliga. Papa Harald Kohr (58), on the other hand, was a real snapper. In four years (three for Kaiserslautern, one for Wattenscheid) he scored 45 goals in 97 games.

The Bittencourts

Leonardo Bittencourt (26) has already had a few positions in the Bundesliga. He has now arrived in Bremen and will meet Werder in a crisis duel against Schalke tomorrow (6.30 p.m., see text below). The younger Bittencourt has 22 goals for five clubs. The older Bittencourt, Papa Franklin (51), played a total of four years in the upper house for Cottbus and VfB Leipzig (now Lok Leipzig). Six hits in 61 games are in his statistics.

The Huebners

The Hübners are represented three times. Papa Bruno Hübner (59) is now sports director of Eintracht Frankfurt. When he was still storming for Kaiserslautern, he scored 19 goals in 76 games. Son Benjamin (31) defends at TSG Hoffenheim – but has already scored seven Bundesliga goals. Son Florian (29) also defends, but for Union Berlin. He’s still waiting for his first hit. Hoffenheim will play against the newly crowned Supercup winner from Munich on Sunday (3:30 p.m.). Union competes in Mönchengladbach today (3:30 p.m.).

The Weisers

Patrick Weiser (48) is a Bundesliga favorite. He made 270 appearances for Cologne and Wolfsburg – and as a defender he scored six goals. Son Mitchell Weiser (26) has two more hits as a full-back. With Leverkusen he will receive Leipzig today (3:30 p.m.).

Die Sanés

Leroy Sané (24) scored his first goal for Bayern last Friday in an 8-0 win over Schalke. For the Royal Blues himself, he was successful twelve times before moving to Manchester City. To catch up with father Souleyman (59), he needs a little more. That was 51 hits for Nuremberg and Wattenscheid.

The Klimowiczs

And already an outlook: Diego Klimowicz (46) scored 70 goals for Wolfsburg, Dortmund and Bochum. Son Mateo (20) is still without a hit for VfB Stuttgart. (Maximilian Bülau)
