Lighter version of Instagram for Android arrives in Brazil this Wednesday | Technology

O Instagram announced that a lighter version of its application will be available for Android phones starting Wednesday (14).

Instagram Lite, as it is called, occupies only 2 MB in the smartphone’s memory and promises to consume less internet. The traditional app is about 30MB when downloaded – or 93% bigger.

Instagram pointed out that 23% of people in South America connect to the internet using 2G networks, which are much slower than the 4G internet.

The intention of the social network is take up less space on people’s phones, have an app that doesn’t crash even on simpler models, and consume less data packets from Internet.

To make it lighter, the developers had to give up some features:

  • augmented reality filters for faces in stories are not available;
  • you can’t do it Reels (short video format similar to TikTok), just watch;
  • it is not possible to make or watch live streams (lives);
  • for IGTV, only the preview of the video can be seen;
  • there is no dark mode;
  • there is no Instagram Shopping;
  • there are no advertisements;
  • animations when passing stories and browsing the app have been simplified.

The company said that some of these features, like the ability to record Reels, should be included in Instagram Lite “in the coming months”.

The rest of the resources are present: take photos and record videos for the timeline and stories with simple color filters, GIFs and stickers, IGTV, comments, in addition to private messages.
